All Ruby Wants

Ruby doesn't know she is different.
She doesn't know that one eye no longer sees the world. She doesn't know that the strange feeling in her neck has a name, or that the tiny structures inside her ears are different from those of other horses. She has never heard the words spinal compression. Or middle ear abnormalities. Or transport anxiety.
Those are human words.
Ruby only understands what she feels.
She knows the comfort of soft grass beneath her feet. The warmth of the morning sun. The familiar sound of another pony grazing nearby. The quiet reassurance of routine. She knows the gentle hands that bring her breakfast. The voices she has learned to trust. The feeling of safety.
And she knows fear.
Not the kind we explain with medical reports or veterinary terminology. The kind that takes over every part of her body. The kind that tells her she must escape.
When Ruby sees a horse float, she doesn't understand that it might carry her somewhere safe. She doesn't know there are people waiting for her hundreds of kilometres away who love her beyond measure. She doesn't know that every decision being made is an attempt to bring her home. She only knows that something inside her tells her she is in danger.
And so she fights.
Not because she is difficult. Not because she is stubborn. But because she is terrified.
For weeks, specialists searched for answers. Veterinary examinations revealed significant spinal compression in her neck, abnormalities affecting her middle ears, blindness in one eye, and hearing loss.
Yet despite everything, one thing remained remarkably unchanged.
Ruby herself.
She still wanted to graze. She still wanted the company of another pony. She still wandered across the paddock with quiet curiosity, enjoying the simple things that make a horse happy. She still greeted each new day with the same gentle spirit that had always defined her.
The challenge was never how to save Ruby.
It was how to help her travel without overwhelming the fear she could not explain.
Ideas were considered. A custom-built padded crate. A long journey by road. A cargo flight normally reserved for racehorses. Careful sedation. Veterinary supervision. Intravenous fluids. Every possibility was explored for one simple reason.
Because Ruby deserves the chance to come home safely.
Sometimes people ask why so much effort is being made for one little pony.
The answer is beautifully simple.
Because to Ruby, this is her entire life.
She doesn't understand budgets. Or logistics. Or engineering. She doesn't know how many people have been trying to solve a problem that seems impossible. She only knows that she wants to feel safe. To graze beside a friend. To wake each morning beneath an open sky. To live quietly. To be loved.
